August 1 — Odaiba Memorial Day. It’s a special time among Digimon fans because it’s the day when the Chosen Children (DigiDestined) first came to the Digital World, and what better way to celebrate than a look at a game based on the series? Digimon Adventure was released for the PSP on January 17, 2013 in Japan. Developed by Prope, it was one of the games released by Namco Bandai Games in celebration of the franchise’s 15th anniversary. Story Digimon Adventure follows the storyline of the anime of the same name, taking those 54 memorable episodes (plus more) and putting it into one game.
Being able to relive and play out my favorite episodes was an incredible experience for me. I wasn’t just revisiting my childhood; I was playing it. If you’ve never watched Digimon Adventure (the first season), something is incredibly wrong with you. The original anime still holds up today. There’s a reason why it was such a hit with many fans.
It had a well-rounded cast of characters who discovered a little bit about themselves and through the help of their Digimon partners, grew and developed, all while trying to protect both their world and the Digital World from evil Digimon. It’s an easy story to follow and heavy on adventure and fantasy, which made it appropriate to turn into an RPG. Some of the episodes from the show are split into more than one chapter in the game. There are even small episodes added in during the Vamdemon (Myotismon) arc that weren’t in the anime.
There are also plenty of sidequests that expand a bit on the chapters and characters. After beating the main storyline, the game jumps immediately into Our War Game, the second Digimon movie involving the battle against Diaboromon on the Internet, as well as the first appearance of Omegamon (Omnimon).
Because of this sudden jump, it doesn’t feel like a year has passed like it was in the movie. All the characters’ models and portraits are the same as the show, but not like in the movie, so that was a little disappointing. In any case, this part of the game isn’t the end either! Afterward you’re thrown into an expanded story where you team up with each protagonist from the other Digimon series to fight against Gankuumon, one of the Royal Knights.
To be honest, this part of the game is rather tedious, though it does provide a big challenge. It’s definitely worth completing, as all your stats and items carry over into a New Game+, where you can replay the story again and breeze through the first part of the game using Omegamon. Trust me, it’s hilarious. Gameplay As I’ve said, Digimon Adventure is a very straightforward RPG game. Controls do what they’re supposed to do and I never ran into any bugs or glitches. The fixed camera can get a little bothersome at times, but it’s not a game breaker.
Depending on the episode, you can have up to three members in the party with your leader and Digimon partner appearing on the map. You can change the party formation and switch out characters at any time (while still under restrictions depending on the episode). It’s very reassuring that characters outside your party will receive 1/4 the experience. It’s important to note that some characters won’t appear in certain episodes, so they won’t be receiving any experience during battles then. As a side note, after the fight with Devimon, Patamon is unusable for a while, as per the story.
You won’t be able to use him again until the fight with PicoDevimon (DemiDevimon), but even then, Patamon can’t evolve (again, as per the story). Strangely enough, you don’t even get to fight Vamdemon in the chapter with Gotsumon and Pumpmon (Pumpkinmon), even though it happened in-show.
Digimon Adventure Game
The evolution lock for Patamon is removed during New Game+, though, so have fun giving that little devil a Heaven’s Knuckle. Each Digimon has a unique parameter for equipping special items called Digi Pieces.
Each Digi Piece has its own shape that you fit into a Digimon’s parameter, so figuring out which Digi Pieces are the best for your Digimon is important. You may want to equip Digi Pieces that can increase a particular part of their stat, such as attack strength or speed, but you can also equip pieces that give them an extra special skill, attack twice, or start a battle as their evolved form. Battles are played out in a turned-based system. Up to three Digimon can battle against up to three opponents. Each Digimon has HP and SP, which is used for special skills and evolving. During each turn, your Digimon can attack, guard, use an item, use a special skill, run, or evolve. On the bottom of the screen is a “timeline” showing icons of the Digimon involved in battle.
The icon on the far left indicates the current Digimon’s turn. After the Digimon’s turn ends, that Digimon’s icon is moved back into the timeline with its placement depending on the type of attack or item used. The timeline then scrolls to the left until the next Digimon’s turn and repeat.
Placement on the timeline is affected if your character confronts a Digimon enemy in the field or were attacked by one. Skills usually are special attacks that sacrifice an amount of SP for dealing a lot more damage than a regular attack. Some special attacks can hit two or all enemies at once. Other skills involve healing teammates or modifying stats to teammates/enemies or inflicting a status condition. Evolving takes up a certain amount of SP depending on the Digimon’s current evolution stage, but doesn’t take up a turn, unlike using items. Status conditions include poisoning, slowdown, or stun. Certain items and attacks induce these conditions which can be quite effective in battle.
With the right items, Digi Pieces, and special attacks, you can abuse this battle system, making sure to keep your enemies far to the right of the timeline as long as possible while attacking them until their HP drops to 0. I found this method especially useful during the later bosses, though it requires time and patience to pull off successfully.
A nice little thing I liked seeing during battles was the scaling of the Digimon, which can vary from tiny to gigantic. Adobe premiere torrents. It’s really fun to watch when the camera does close-ups of a tiny Digimon and you can see a giant foot next to it. The game features a Bond Rank system that occurs during parts of the game, mostly during “down times.” Basically, a character can interact with another character.
By choosing the right dialogue, the two characters will increase their Bond Rank. If you happen to fail, there are many other opportunities to try again. Bond Ranks aren’t necessary to do, but it will help in battles, as characters in your party with high Bond Rank points will conduct a free attack before their actual turn. Not only does this make your playthrough easier, it develops the characters and stories further.
See, when you have enough Bond Rank among all characters, you are able to obtain all the Ultimate (aka Mega in Western terms) forms of the six other Digimon that didn’t have them in the anime. You even get to see a spiffy evolution sequence for each one and it is amazing, save for the recycled MetalGarurumon sequence background. It’s possible to miss one or all of these events if you don’t have the right amount of Bond Rank distribution, which means you’d have to redo it again in a New Game or New Game+ (Bond Rank is the only thing reset for New Game+).
You can watch a video of the sequences above. Occasionally you will unlock Digital Dungeons in between episodes. These Digital Dungeons are basically for grindfests and obtaining special items after defeating the boss of each Digital Dungeon.
You can replay the Dungeons as many times as you. However, characters are limited to who are available to play in your current progress of the story mode. There are seven Digital Dungeons in total, with the last one unlocked after beating the entire main game once. These grid-like Dungeons are full of Digimon to fight, but can get increasingly tedious fighting them all.
You can avoid these fights and go straight to the boss if you want. Presentation Due to the PSP limitations, the models and backgrounds could fare better. There are many things in the show that couldn’t be replicated into game form because of this, as well. There are some liberties taken in the story, such as addition/removal of dialogue and scenes to better match the game, but aside from that and the graphics, it’s incredibly faithful to the original look and feel of the show. Our War Game especially looks amazing in game form. Almost no difference from how the Internet looks in the movie.
The menu screens are easy to follow. The overworld map is also very basic. You take control of the current leader while your Digimon follows behind. The map is linear for the most part, but there are many items scattered and also plenty of Digimon roaming around the map. During dialogue scenes, portraits of the characters talking will appear on screen to the side(s) of the text box with a few different expressions and drawings, newly done by Toei Animation. The game is nearly fully voiced by the original cast of the anime.
That includes all the children, Digimon, and the villains, with a couple of exceptions. Even the evolution sequences are re-created to imitate the show as close as possible. The portraits aren’t limited to the main characters either. The kids’ parents and even the Fuji TV station workers all received new art! While I can sit here and praise many things about this game, there are several aspects of the game that I was little irked. I love that new Toei Animation portrait art for the characters were made, but it seems Probe took some shortcuts along the way.
With the effort put into the new portrait art, I was a little baffled that there weren’t any portraits for the characters with different outfits. Hikari (Kari) is the only character to have two different ones, one of her in PJs and the other in her standard outfit. Maybe I wasn’t expecting to see Punk Agumon (Agumon wearing an afro) or Reggae Palmon, but not even Mimi without her hat? The strangest one is the episode where Palmon and Mimi wear princess outfits. In game form, you see neither their models nor their portraits. Music On top of following the story, the original Japanese opening theme “Butter-Fly” and evolution theme “Brave Heart” are used. In fact, the moment the kids get sucked into the portal to the Digital World, the original intro sequence fittingly plays here.
The soundtrack was composed to sound similar to the anime’s, such as the battle music and the episode select screen music, which sounds similarly to the episode recap music in the anime. The famous Bolero piece, a symbolic track for the anime, is also used. My favorite track is this solemn, sad piano piece that hit me in the feels plenty of times. The downside to the soundtrack is that, while it’s great, there’s very little variety. This is apparent when you start hearing the same ones over and over which can get quite repetitive and dull.
For example, the evolution theme “Brave Heart” is played during the first two boss fights in the game, recreating a significant moment at those points in the story. The fights don’t last very long so it’s fine, but it got bothersome at the end because it was played during a really difficult fight that took a few retries. Thankfully almost all other boss fights have the usual boss music. The lack of more tracks is really disappointing, especially the fact that “I Wish,” the first ending theme, isn’t even used. In the episode where Mimi is found to be living the life of a princess, the “I Wish” song was a key track to play, highlighting Mimi’s talent (and at the same time, her seiyuu AiM’s). One would think if they got to use “Butter-Fly” and “Brave Heart,” why not “I Wish”?
“Seven” would have been a nice addition too, though I don’t find it nearly as important. I also wish the piano version of “Butter-Fly” had been used since it has greater ambience during critical moments of the story. I know it’s a lot of nitpicking, but for Probe to get this far with everything else and not utilize everything is a little strange. I have doubts there were licensing issues and whatnot.
Again, I know I’m just nitpicking, but as trivial as these things may be, it’s quite glaring. Final Thoughts Digimon Adventure is an amazing game for long-time fans. Being able to play out the show in full was something I never thought would ever happen in this day and age. I’m absolutely glad that a game like this happened and thankful for Probe and Bandai Namco Games for delivering a game well beyond my expectations.
Even though I nitpicked a lot about areas where the game lacked, they’re all very trivial aesthetic stuff that doesn’t affect the gameplay or story at all. The positive aspects greatly outweigh the negative. The return of almost the entire voice cast, soundtrack, and especially the addition of the Ultimate forms re-kindled my love for the series and the franchise as a whole. The only really unfortunate thing about this game is that it’s on the dead PSP, so there’s a slim chance it would ever be released in the West. As a side note, people who pre-ordered the game or purchased it on PSN received Digivice Portable ver., a digital port of the original Digivice virtual pet toy released in 1999. The portable version has multiple skins and was updated to include all Ultimate forms and Omegamon in conjunction with the Digimon Adventure PSP game. I was really impressed with the amount of effort put into this game (though wish they went full out on everything) and I really hope Probe makes a game based on the other seasons.
A Digimon Tamers game would be damn sweet. Until then, I recommend this game to all Digimon fans.
You don’t need to know Japanese to play it, though it would certainly help. However, there are guides and YouTube videos that can help you.
